A very rare original Victorian poison ring, dated by its construction and craftsmanship to circa 1890—and quite possibly earlier. Sculpted in rich 18ct Gold, the design centres on a high, continuous bezel cradling a natural, unheated Blue Sapphire cabochon of approximately 1.80ct. Its glorious, vivid royal blue has angular growth lines and striations consistent with a natural Sapphire showing no evidence of heat treatment.

Elegant architectural details complete the silhouette: crisp triangular shoulder cut-outs, and a petite round Red Spinel set to each shoulder in raised, milgrained collets. The smooth, domed cabochon and sculptural, hand-finished goldwork lend this rare poison ring a refined yet bold presence—an exquisite late 19th-century jewel with enduring allure.

MEASUREMENTS: Sapphire cabochon measures 10mm long x 7.5mm wide, weighing approx. 1.80ct.
Spinels measure 1.5mm in diameter.
Band is 1.5mm wide at the back.
WEIGHT: 3.9g.

MATERIALS: Tests as 18ct Gold, Natural unheated Blue Sapphire cabochon (1.80ct), Red Spinel.

HALLMARKS: Since we have dated this piece as being made before 1950, a hallmark is not required in order for it to be sold in line with UK hallmarking legislation.

PACKAGING: Your order will be gift-wrapped free of charge in a Lillicoco cardboard box made from recycled materials, tied with a ribbon.

Condition

EXCELLENT: The Sapphire cabochon is intact with only minor surface abrasions visible under close inspection; the Red Spinels are bright and well-set. The 18ct Gold bezel and shank are crisp with a bright polish and light surface scratches commensurate with age. No obvious resizing or restoration is evident, and all settings are secure.
